Playing .srt subtitles with media player
Hi, does anyone know to play .srt subtitles with windows media player?
I tried looking around but couldn't find any info on it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

make sure the srt file has the same name as your video file:
movie.srt
movie.avi
directvobsub/media player classic have to be installed/used.
What if you want more that one subtitle stream?
mux srt subtitles into an ogm container, which allows multiple subs

What is SRT
SubRip is a software program for Windows which "rips" (extracts) subtitles and their timings from video.
SubRip can extract from live video, video files and DVDs, then record the extracted subtitles and timings as a text file,
and can save the recognized subtitles as bitmaps for later subtraction (erasure) from the source video.

Subrip is also the name of the subtitle format created by this software. The caption text files are named with the extension .SRT.
This format is supported by most software video players and subtitle creation programs, detailed in the article Comparison of media players.

In practice, SubRip is configured with the correct codec for the video source, then trained on the text area, fonts, colors and video processing required4] to recognize subtitles.
After trial and fine tuning, SubRip can automatically extract subtitles for the whole file during playback.
SubRip records the beginning and end times and text for each subtitle in the output text (.SRT) file.

SRT is perhaps the most basic of all subtitle formats.

It consists of four parts, all in text..

1. A number indicating the which subtitle it is in the sequence.
2. The time that the subtitle should appear on the screen, and then disappear.
3. The subtitle itself.
4. A blank line indicating the start of a new subtitle.

When placing SRT in Matroska, part 3 is converted to UTF-8 and placed in the data portion of the Block.
Part 2 is used to set the timecode of the Block, and BlockDuration element. Nothing else is used.

Here is an example SRT file:

1
00:02:17,440 --> 00:02:20,375
Senator, we're making
our final approach into Coruscant.

2
00:02:20,476 --> 00:02:22,501
Very good, Lieutenant.

In this example, the text "Senator, we're making our final approach into Coruscant." would be converted into UTF-8
and placed in the Block. The timecode of the block would be set to "00:02:17,440".
And the BlockDuration element would be set to "00:00:02,935".

The same is repeated for the next subtitle.

Because there are no general settings for SRT, the CodecPrivate is left blank.

Do you enjoy the movie if you don’t actually understand the language of it?
Do you satisfy with the movie which some actors’ voices are too soft? You probably don’t enjoy or satisfy them.

Thinking to add a subtitle to the movie?
If so, then you are at the right place. This tutorial will lead you through the steps of adding a subtitle to a movie.

How to add subtitles to movies?
The very first thing you have to do is to make sure that your movie is in avi file extension.
If not, you have to convert it to avi file extension yourself.

Next, search and download the subtitle that match your movie from these famous subtitle sites –
 www.divxsubtitles.net, subscene.com, www.mysubtitles.com, www.mysubtitles.org and many more.
However, it is hard to find a subtitle for a less popular movie sometimes.

Alright, you should have a srt file with you now. SRT is a subtitle text file. You can see the
contents with any text editor like notepad. Place it in the same folder as the movie. You have to rename the srt file to match the avi file name. Both names must be exactly the same!
For example:
- Alvin-and-the-chipmunks.avi
- Alvin-and-the-chipmunks.srt

Then, you need to download and install VobSub so that your video players
learn how to display subtitle while playing a movie.

And that’s it! Your video should display the subtitle if you did the above steps correctly.

Hey folks,
I'm trying to combine subtitles (I have in an srt format) in an divx avi file.
I know I can use divx to dvd converters for this purpose, but I still want a quick tool that will output the
file in the same format (only with the subtitles). The only tool I found that can do this job is submux (parft of the VobSub 2.23 package),
but when I tried it it only gave an output of a 1-2 second movie. Any help would be appreciated.

Combine means hardcoding, or?!?

VirtualDubMod with VobSub as a filter.
